Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre co- conut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was origi- nally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. One of the world’s less known curiosities in this category is Sigiriya Rock Fortress in Sri Lanka, a gigantic column of rock rising 200m from the forested plains below. Located in the approximate centre of the country, Sigiriya is one cornerstone of Sri Lan- ka’s cultural triangle, the others being Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress isn’t famous like Machu Picchu but it’s Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist attraction so don’t as- sume it won’t be crowded.

Minneriya National Park is wildlife sanctuary lo- cated in the North Central province of Sri Lanka. Nature lovers on Minneriya Jeep Safari often spot large number of Sri Lankan Elephants gathering around to grass fields on the edges of the reservoir during the dry season.

Visit Dambulla Rock Temple

Dambulla Rock Temple Dambulla cave temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country.[2] This site is situated 148 kilometers (92 mi) east of Colombo and 72 kilometers (45 mi) north of Kandy. Dambulla is the largest and best-pre- served cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Bud- dha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses.

Visit a spice garden in Matale to see many different types of spices Sri Lanka is famous for. Just 25 km from the hill capital of Kandy, the Matale spice gardens are among the best on the island. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed.

Visit Kandy Temple of the Tooth Relic. Kandy Temple of The Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa. There will be “Maligawa Thewawa” with chanting and worshipping Lord Buddha’s tooth of relic. A huge crowd comes there to get blessing of Buddha, in every- day. Before preparing your visit keep in mind that the Maligawa is a Buddhist shrine and make sure to wear attire that covers your shoul- ders and legs.

If you are visiting Kandy during July-August, a definite must see is the Kandy Esala Perahera, known to be one of the most popular Sri Lankan Events.

Day 05 Kandy / Nuwara Eliya

You can enjoy the sightseeing of Ramboda Falls. Ramboda Falls is 109 m high and 11th highest wa- terfall in Sri Lanka and 729th highest waterfall in the world. It is situated in Pussellawa area, on the A5 highway at Ramboda Pass. It formed by Panna Oya which is a tributary of Kothmale Oya.

Spend your time at a tea plantation place (You can taste fresh Cey- lon tea at Tea Factory enroute ) – The diversity of Ceylon teas leads to a great variety in how you can enjoy it.

Nuwara Eliya city tour (In the evening ) Nuwara Eliya the hill station of Nuwara Eliya (City of Light) is celebrated for its fresh climate, the wonderful scenery all around, and its “Englishness”. Wonderful mountain panoramas surround the wide valley, into which fall many lovely but icy waterfalls. There are still a few patches of virgin jun- gle left, with stunted, gnarled trees, primitive tree ferns and strange looking lichen. It is the hub of the tea country, lying 77 km from Kandy and 180 km from Colombo. At an elevation of 1800m, the tem- perature varies from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, falling to near zero on winter nights and producing oc- casional frost. The roads zigzag through the most spectacular mountain scenery to reach this pic- turesque district.

Galle is the capital city of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The town has a World Heritage Site to its name and that is predominantly responsible for its popularity with tourists. This is the 300-year-old Dutch Fort, but there are other historical buildings to view as well. If you are visiting from Colombo you can take the train or the bus to get to Galle.
